Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
Someone is going to be seriously fucked for this

Wearing ear defenders is no excuse there should be touch lookouts when anyone is using power. There is conventional look out and someone watching him standing next to the fellas working and tap them on the back when the flag is raised and the horn blown so they can get off the track and into a place of safety

This is why railways are such a deadly place even if you don't have ear defenders on when you are standing on or near the track you cannot hear a train coming until its on top of you

As a driver myself I’ve seen some close calls with the public especially.
Feel for all involved.

Isn't there supposed to be a lookout about 200 metres down the track with a whistle?

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
FC it depends on the sighting distance curves ect

This case is malpractice of the highest order

I have no idea what happened here but would not be surprised at all if it turns out that lookouts had been distracted by a small rectangular object.

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
The outer lookouts must have not been something not right because its track straight from what the view I can see

Dependant on line of sight,
Sometimes you can have two or three lookouts. Track does look straight though.

I spend a lot of time in wales and let’s just say it’s quite a backwards place, I find the taffs to be pretty sloppy and lazy when it comes to work

Ear defenders?

Is that different from ear plugs or ear muffs?

Munkyfunk. They will and rightly so. We are not the 3rd World there is no excuse for people to be killed at work

The track was as straight as a die and visibility was perfect. Very odd.

Cheers

Learn something new even after 6 or so years.

Looking at the Screwfix site, we would have just called them "ear protection" or "protective ear muffs," if you had to be formal.

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
I know fuck all about this sort of thing but surely there is a more technological way of warning the workers rather than a manual look out? If an app can tell where a train is at any given time why can’t the maintenance teams?

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
Wasn't there a similar accident a few years back, where a runaway trolley type thing, killed about 5 track workers?

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
All I know is our transport system and management of safety for workers and commuters is crap.

We are being raped of our money for a shit service and the workers are being treated like slaves.

Westham67 10:41 Thu Jul 4
Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
Yes there was. That's just bad practice and nothing can be done to prevent it. All trolley wheels should have chocks checked put under then by the trained trolley operator and the PICOW in my Person in charge of work

A closed line no lookouts for trains. A runny track trolley get can up 40 mph,
